First SHSI online acquaintance party themed Among Us

Like every school year, the SHSI Student Government plans for the annual Acquaintance Party that many await. Unfortunately, with the current situation of being in a pandemic, people do not expect face-to-face parties for safety purposes. Last October 30, 2020, the SG prepared a virtual acquaintance party with the theme ‘Among Us’, referencing the well known game many students play.

Before the party started, a socio-emotional learning discussion was facilitated by Ms. Leah Pablo, the school’s guidance counselor, for the high school department to listen to. A video was shown persuading students to continue and overcome their battles. After a short discussion, the students were put into groups to share what they felt at that moment. Some say they were tired, some were feeling happy to take a break from schoolwork with the virtual party and others were just feeling relaxed.

This year’s Acquaintance Party started with the introduction of the Mr. and Ms. Freshmen 2020 candidates. Clips of each candidate’s talent such as singing and playing the guitar were shown. Days before the party, photos of the candidates were posted on Facebook where anyone can freely vote for the candidate they support by simply reacting to their respective photos.

While the judges determined the scores of the candidates, a short game of ‘CHAmong Us’ or the combination of Charades and Among Us took place to keep the students entertained. The game consists of one guesser, who has to guess the word being acted; 3 impostors, to confuse the guesser; and the actors, who would portray the given word. If ever the guesser gets the word, they have the chance to pick a person who they think is the impostor, eliminating them from the game. Otherwise, the impostor gets to remove one person confusing the guesser more. Impostors win if they get rid of the actors while the guesser and actors win if they could get rid of all the impostors. Every group had around 15 players and enjoyed 2 to 3 games before being brought back to the main room.

After the games, candidates were put to the spotlight for a question and answer portion. Each candidate was given limited time to answer the set of questions for their last challenge before the coronation of the winner.

As the Acquaintance Party reached its end, the spotlight was brought to the Student Government who was responsible for the entire event. The members of the Student Government took an oath in front of the students and teachers promising to help the school become a better place, officially inducting them.

This year’s Mr. and Ms. Freshmen are Daniel Anthony Carcosia and Marithe Jazmin Ferrer. Special Awards were also given to Bettina Ligero & Thea Ranit for winning Duo Of The Night, John Comia & Rafayel Cabatingan for winning Best Impostor, Ma’am Yolly P. Olarve for winning Best Crewmate, Kohlean Dy Ning & Franz Felicio for winning Ship of the Night, and finally Grade 11 - STEM, ABM, HUMSS, and Gas for winning Among the Batch!
